Preparing for Your Engagement Session Part 3 | What to Wear

Last week I talked about how to choose your location for your engagement session!  Hopefully after reading my tips and tricks you’re feeling a little less stressed about it!! This week is another hot topic as far as engagement sessions: what to wear!! Ah!  I remember the night before our engagement session, I was freaking out trying to think about what I should/could wear!  Well, here are some tips and tricks to help ease your worry:

  • If you’re wearing make-up (which I highly suggest you do!) make sure to add a little extra eye makeup!  It helps your eyes to really pop in photographs!  If you’re hyperventilating at the thought of navigating that, I suggest going to see a professional before!  Right before you do your engagement session is a great time to do your makeup trial, and then you’ll see what it will look like in photographs to make sure you love it!
  • Don’t try to MATCH, but instead pick outfits that will coordinate!  A great way to do this is pair neutrals with a little color!  Have one person where a neutral color that coordinates well with the color the other person is wearing!
  • I have each of my couples choose to outfits: a more casual and a dressier option!  This adds a fun variety to the collection of photos you’ll receive!
  • Be as bold or as simple  as you want to be!  Bold colors add a super nice pop to your images and are fun but, a simple white dress can look just as nice!  If you’re looking to add a pop of color it can always be done with scarves, bold necklaces, or fun shoes!
  • Patterns: they look awesome in photos unless they are super teeny-tiny!  If you’re wearing one, I’d try to make sure it’s not overwhelming and distracting!  Also, graphics tees are usually a no go!
  • Modest is hottest. That’s right friends, I said it!  Make sure whatever you’re wearing is something you’d be okay with your future-daughter wearing.  Low-cut shirts and short shorts limit the things that we can do and the number of angles I can shoot at!
  • Most importantly, be yourself.  Just because an outfit looks Pinterest-worthy doesn’t mean that it’s you!  I strive to create genuine images and that’s a little hard to do when you’re not wearing something you would normally be okay with wearing!!

Now I know that that’s a lot of information but here are a few pretty pictures with some of my favorite outfits to distract you:

Wife, mama, wielder of light & joy, and capturer of moments.  I thrive off of conversation and genuine connection.  In between wrangling our kiddos, and hanging my husband, you'll find me dreaming up my next idea or creative endeavour.  It's these things that culminate to give my imagery a warmth and joy to them - the greatest compliment I could receive.

Lauren grew up spending her summers at the shore, and when she and Nick got together, she couldn't help but introduce him, too!  Their session in New Jersey was filled with gorgeous light, sweet smiles, and so much love & laughter.

Connor and Alli's wedding celebration was full of lush florals, gorgeous details, and a whole lot of joy.  Their first look was one of the most sacred moments I've witness on a wedding day... filled with so much delight and love!

One of my greatest inspirations comes from exploring and the California coast fulfills that wanderlust like nothing else.  Anytime I have rolling hills and oceanside views, I'm in heaven.

She's the ultimate hypewoman. I was pretty nervous about being photographed and Lauren made everything fun and flexible. Honestly, I can't imagine the day without her and her team. They were wonderful and hearing from Lauren was always a genuine delight.
