A gorgeous, ethereal Santa Barbara, California Bridal Shoot by Destination Wedding Photographer Lauren R Swann

Well wedding industry friends, its wedding season and that means that our weekends are filled with amazing couples, sweet venues, and incredible moments! It also means that we are producing our own individual art at a rapid rate to best serve our clients.  I think in the midst of the busy, that’s when its easy for us to lose our creativity.  If we’re not careful, and don’t set up boundaries ahead of time, we’ll find ourselves producing work and not art.  I don’t know about you, but that’s not my job! My job is to capture my couples’ wedding days in a beautiful, cohesive, and artful way!

I was reminded of this this morning as I was reading for my quiet time, Shauna Niequest’s Bittersweet.  It’s there that Shauna says,

“This is the thing about art: it’s not about market demand.  It’s not like trying to figure out if this town needs another grocery store or dry cleaner.  It’s more like a million voices all yelling out one word over and over, and every once in a while the sound makes the whole world sit up straight and pay attention for a split second.

The world doesn’t need another band, per se.  It doesn’t strictly speaking need another book or another photograph or another album.  The general world population will survive without one more stage production and one more gallery showing.

This is the thing though; you might not.  We create because we were made to create, having been made in the image of God, whose first role was Creator.”

Phew!! Those paragraphs are literally the heartbeat behind the series on Fridays called “Create.”  So friends, today I’m challenging you to join me.  Get outside of your “typical” day and set aside sometime to create art for the sake of creating.  I think you’ll be surprised at how it affects your work this weekend!

Wife, mama, wielder of light & joy, and capturer of moments.  I thrive off of conversation and genuine connection.  In between wrangling our kiddos, and hanging my husband, you'll find me dreaming up my next idea or creative endeavour.  It's these things that culminate to give my imagery a warmth and joy to them - the greatest compliment I could receive.

I was pretty nervous about being photographed and Lauren made everything fun and flexible. Honestly, I can't imagine the day without her and her team. They were wonderful and hearing from Lauren was always a genuine delight.
