Picking Images for Blog Posts

Good morning sweet friends! Last week Morgan told me that I should probably stop calling everyone sweet, but ya know what?! I think I’ll stick with it!  So sweet friends, on to today’s post topic: choosing photos for your blog post.  I don’t know about you guys, but sometimes I struggle so much to choose images for my blog post… mainly because I love my couples and when I become emotionally attached to them its difficult to narrow down the moments of their day into a concise storyline.

So why make them concise?

  • Well, first and foremost, if I add too many images to my blog posts, they won’t load.  I don’t know about you, but when images don’t load on a page, I’m much more likely to skip out on waiting them to load.  I know, I know, that patience thing… I promise I’m working on it.
  • Second of all, the average attention span of a human being is about 8 seconds.  That means that even if someone is scrolling through my images at lightning speed, they are likely to not make it through a typical amount of images.  Instead, I want to make my posts concise so that they’re more likely to make it to the end of the post.
  • I also want to make sure that I’m showcasing my best work and the best parts of my clients’ day.  One of my jobs as a photographer is to curate the images from my client’s weddings into a beautiful story of the day.  I always want to best serve my clients and this is one way that I do it!
  • When I’m not paying attention to making my images concise, I’ll often show almost the same image twice instead of erring on the side of variety.  What do I mean by that?  Instead of choosing two very different images to pair together, it’s easy to fall into choosing ones that are similar.  When I do that, I’m creating a competition for the viewer’s eye.  Instead of looking at both images they’ll likely only look at one.  If it’s about the time when their attention is up, they may skip that image all together!

See how these two images compete with each other? The focal length is almost the same and so is the composition.  Instead, if I do the option below, there’s much more variety between the images and they don’t compete as much with each other!  This is important to think about when you’re compiling images for your blog post!

  • Make sure that you’re showing your best work and the photographs that best tell the story of your clients’ day! Remember that this blog post is ultimately a service to them and they love to see how you curate their day!
  • Add variety between diptychs (two images paired together) and eliminate images that are too similar to each other.
  • You want your blog post to be balanced so make sure that you’re showcasing different parts of the day but in a concise way.

  1. This is awesome! Sometimes I become blind to these tips when I just love certain images so much. It’s good to be more objective sometimes ;)

This is SO SO important and definitely something I am working on this year! When you have a wedding full of great details and portraits, it can be really hard to narrow it down but I think what you said about the 8-second attention span really stuck with me and will drill it home :)

I seriously needed this. I always am trying to pare down my blog posts and go for fewer images and still end up with too many! Gotta really work on that! Especially since I have the shortest attention span of them all. Haha. Great post, sweet friend ;) <3

I love this! I completely agree that pairing images with purpose is so important. P.S. that detail shot of her dress is stunning!

  13. Isabelle says:

Agree, I see why to many too looking blogposts and after scrolling and scrolling Im still see the bride getting ready — I’m out.
Photographers need to learn how to cull and curate much tighter IMHO.
